The first Hong Kong Common Law Practical Training Course, co-organised by the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China and the Hong Kong International Legal Talents Training Academy (HKILTTA), concluded in Hong Kong last month. The two-week training course is an inaugural programme of the Academy after its launch in November 2024. Winnie Tam SC and Frances Lok SC from Des Voeux Chambers were invited as speakers for the training course.
Winnie Tam SC delivered an insightful session on “Judicial Review of Arbitration in Hong Kong,” providing a comprehensive analysis of key cases and judicial decisions. Winnie also joined the panel discussion titled “Handling of Foreign-related Law Proceedings: Comparison between Mainland & Hong Kong” moderated by Professor Zhao Yun from the Faculty of Law of HKU. Other panelists included Richard Khaw SC and Laurence Li SC from Temple Chambers. The session fostered an insightful exchange on the differences and similarities between the legal systems of the HKSAR and the Chinese Mainland. The speakers further engaged in comprehensive discussions with Mainland judges, gaining valuable insights into the latest developments in Mainland judicial practices.
Frances Lok SC also delivered a lecture and a cases studies session on “Hong Kong Contract Law“, introducing the key aspects as well as the practical applications of contract law within Hong Kong’s common law framework.
The inaugural cohort of the training course comprised 25 judges from the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China, the High People’s Court of Guangdong Province and courts of the nine Mainland cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Aiming to strengthen cooperation between the legal systems of Hong Kong and Mainland China, the course also promotes a deeper understanding of the interface between the rules and legal mechanisms in the Greater Bay Area.
